Shapes, Shapes, Shapes!

I just love shapes.  There is something about exploring, building, composing, illustrating, and connecting with shapes that puts a smile on all students' faces!  Here's a glimpse at math this week through pictures...

It's a Common Core Christmas!

Meeting Common Core Math Standards with a bit of holiday spirit can be sooo delightful!  After a lesson on sorting objects from shortest to longest, students were given a set of precut papers.  I alternated colors and shorten the length approximately two inches each time.  The kids were given the sheets in random order and asked to arrange.  During this time, I asked the kids to turn and talk about any "other" math observed during the process.  Within minutes we were talking about patterns.  A few students were struggling to determine the correct order of objects but immediately identified shortest to longest as discussion of an AB pattern took place.

Once this objective was met, kids were given a set of precut bulbs.  I'm so blessed to have girls from my past looping class drop by each morning and assist with organization, cutting, tutoring, and general maintenance.  Students were asked to write each of the letter from their first name in the bulbs.  We strung their strand on their newly created Christmas Tree.  With a new calendar rug donated this past month from Donors Choose, we were able to easily sort into groups.  Names with 3 letters, 4 letters, 5 letters... all the way to 8 letters.  Allowing time for my students to turn and talk about the data is crucial to my understanding of who is meeting objectives and can clearly explain least and most.  PLUS it's so much fun listening to the kids talk curriculum content.  It makes my heart melt.

Shape Monster!

I searched and searched for CUTE and EASY to assemble shape monsters but came up empty handed.  I suppose sometimes it's easier to create them yourself!  After a few hours, I've created, cut, and prepared examples for this coming week. This week is gonna be exciting!!!!

All About Numbers

I want to send a HUGE shoutout, thank you to my friend Kim Adsit.  She swooped in for the rescue with her All About Numbers and it's been a H.I.T!

Before working with her unit, I had my kiddos explore clocks, dominoes, and pennies.  In addition to our explorations, we discussed tally marks (attendance) and ordinal numbers (line-up strategies).

I began each lesson with a counting book.  Then we created a chart whole group.  The kiddos were able to follow-up with their own reproducible books.

Rockin with Doubles

Its the Doubles Rap, Baby!  We are diving into doubles and near doubles in class.  Nearly a year ago, Heidi Samuelson from Swamp Frog First Graders posted a video tutorial on creating an iPod case out of an envelope for your flashcards. You can link here to see her post.

I gave each of my kids the doubles rap to place in the "screen" of the iPod.

Once the doubles rap was glued on the sealed envelope, the kids colored a border.  This allowed for a visual of where they should cut the the top off.

Technology is powerful.  The kids love their iPod case and are eager to pull out their math facts.

I'm including a copy of my flashcards and the Double Rap.  Enjoy!

Doubles Rap Saoud

Update 10/17/2013 {Crazy, exactly two years later}...  Now that I've looped up with my darlings, I have a new group to create rockin' doubles iPods with!

Today we listen to Harry Kindergarten's doubles video.  You must subscribe.  All the videos are AMAZING!  ... and probably not a big surprise for most!

This year, I gave each child a menu button...

Bug Off! Math Center

With only a few weeks remaining in second grade, my kids are working on associating number strings with multiplication.  This concentration center is themed for Camping with Books. When working out the problems, the kids are asked to use invented strategies.  I love watching the light bulbs go off and the meaningful discussions between partners.
