Centipede's 100 Shoes: Integrating Math and Literature

.
Have you read Centipede's 100 Shoes?  This book is filled with math!  Literature and Math connections are among my favorite!

Here's a youtube reading of the story!

I've created a fun pack to integrate math and literature. This file can be used for 100th day fun. Learn the truth about centipedes through the math integrated in this adorable story!  Students will be engaged while investigating how many legs this creepy crawly really has!

100th Day of FUN! {Picture Post}

As previously stated, I used two fabulous units from two very supportive friends!  Kathleen from Growing Kinders and Cara from The First Grade Parade.  All activities were a hit and everyone, including myself, went home happy!  Now that is success!!!!

 Cara is right, It's Kind of a BIG deal!

Kathleen simply amazes me! Did you know she is presenting at the I Teach K conference this summer?  After you finish viewing my picture post, link over and scout her presentation dates {here}

We started our day with Center FUN!!! I combined activities from both ladies to complete the day.  To avoid displaying images of EVERYTHING, I'm gonna show only a few fun happenings from each packet.  There was VERY few things unused from each!

After rotating through everything 100, we read 100th Day Worries by Margery Cuyler! And shared our 100th Day collections.  *Sniff*  I'm bummed that I missed the images of our collections displayed in the hallway!  We took these collections and compared the sizes of objects and how FULL the bags looked based on the size of each item displayed.  I had an awful hard time convincing some that the bags rice and lego blocks were both 100 sooo out came the sorting mats!

To follow up our discussion, the kids completed a response sheet from Kathleen's Unit!
Kayla's dad is overseas in the Military.  She really opened up about her concerns.  So sweet!  She colored the smiley for the fun day and made tears for missing her daddy!  My heart breaks!!!

Kaden was very honest about his feelings of removing the training wheels from his bike.  This topic became a discussion in which all the kids could relate!

About this time, I broke out the smell good from my 100th Day Survival Kit and enjoyed a piece of chocolate which is my FAV!!!  I shared this image last Friday but it's too awesome not to share again!  Be Jealous, Very Jealous!!!

To end our day, we created Sweet Cara's cookie craft and enjoyed fresh baked chocolate chip cookies to close our enjoyable day.

NOW, the countdown begins!!!

Monument'al Tour Guide and more...

Hi Friends!  I've been a busy lady since my last post!!  I wanted to share my Monument'al Tour Guide (from my Cherry Blossom Friends Unit).  We had a wonderful time learning about the monuments in DC while reading Cherry Blossom Friends by Corkey Hay DeSimone. I've added this guide for $1.50 to my store.

If you purchased my Cherry Blossom's Unit, please link to the store by clicking graphic below to re-download your copy.  When completing our Tour Guide in class, I noticed a mistake on the Lincoln Memorial page.

Are you interested in reading about how I pulled together the unit?  Here's my latest article at Really Good Stuff on Integrating Science by linking on the picture below.

Here are a few pictures of our 100th day celebration...

101st Day of School

I saw a cute mini unit from Kelli of Castle and Crayons for the 101st day of school.  Several years ago, my kids and I celebrated the 101st day of school with the 101 Dalmatians.  We had a blast.  Looping with the same group of students for several years leads to lots of creativity.

We made edible dog collars, ate mutt food (Cocoa Puffs), and made dog ears with 101 dots.  I could only find a few pictures but thought I'd share.

Couldn't find the picture of our collars!  =(  Anyhow..  You got the idea!  Go check out Kelli's freebie!

UPDATE: I received a message from Vicky.  She celebrated 101st day of school back in 08 and has adorable pictures of the kids.  You have to see the dog house.  Click here.

100th Day Expectations

I've been asked to share more details about our 100th day projects.  I've uploaded both the file I used for my first graders and second graders to GoogleDocs.  I'm not too crazy about the website but it will allow you to edit the download to accommodate your 100th day celebration.

100th Day Projects

With the 100th day around the corner, my kiddos are preparing for their big 100th day projects.  Since we are in second grade, my kids work on groups of 100 through a 1000.  Last year was a BIG success.  Many students traveled through our primary hallway to take a look.  I couldn't find all my fabulous pictures but did manage to find a few.

Here is the rubric used:

Here are a few examples:

The darling who made this project had the final 100 peace sign on a t-shirt to match her project.  SOOOO CUTE!!!

 This darling made a key (located in the bottom corner) to go along with her arrangement of goodies!
